Bus Buddies Program
It is essential that children are exposed to text and have books readily available to them. It is no secret that kids whose parents read to them regularly outperform students who do not have books read to them in the home. So, what can you do to ensure all students have access to books? Host a book drive and get those students books!
It is a goal of mine to start a Bus Buddies Program at my school. As discussed on the homepage, I see the "zip-code divide" at my school daily. We have students with everything that are walking along with students that have nothing. Along with not owning books in the home, their bus ride to and from school is easily over an hour each way.

Our administration has daily behavioral referrals from bus drivers about students who are misbehaving and acting out. I talk to some repeat offenders and asked why they behave that way on the bus, and their response is that "I am bored" or "it is too long to just sit there".
After some thought about what could be done to help students behave on the bus, this is where my bus buddies program was born. I asked if they would like to have something to do on the bus. They wanted TV's, video games, iPads, etc. Once they realized that was not going to happen, they liked the ideas of having book buddies on the bus. They liked the idea of getting books and able to sit and read with their friends.
My hopes is to follow the below Action Plan and start to implement this Bus Buddies Program next school year. My desire outcome for this program is a reduced number of behavior referrals but also an increase in student motivation to read and increased student achievement. My hopes is that my colleagues will start to see an improvement in a student's literacy performance as a result of being a part of this program.
