What tools and practices can teachers implement within a school setting to help increase student achievement and motivation for low socioeconomic students who struggle in literacy?
Abstract
Literacy skills for reading and writing are very rigorous with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards. Students who are of low socioeconomic status are struggling to keep up with the rigors of the Common Core State Standards, and the education gap is proceeding to get wider. One reason a student of low socioeconomic struggle in with literacy is lack of motivation. A student’s motivation and attitude affects their literacy achievement in both reading and writing. This Weebly provides educators ways to increase student motivation through digital resources, Project-Based Learning, Scaffolded Reading Experience, Thematic Learning, and a Bus Buddies Program. The end result of finding ways to motivate a student to want to learn is increased student achievement. Student motivation will help increase student achievement. With increased student achievement, the education gap can begin to get thinner. These practices will also work with students who are not low socioeconomic status but are struggling with motivation to literacy.

I am a teacher with a passion for literacy!
I have taught for six years and this year I taught second grade for the first time. Before that, I taught first grade for five years. Each year I have had the privilege of teaching about 24 students. I get 180 days with these students. It is my goal to put forth 100% of my effort to ensure that I am doing everything for my kids. Sometimes this means doing things that do not require my educational background. Many students come to school and it is the first place that they see a smiling face and get a hot meal to eat. Throughout my time in my master's program, I have learned many things to make me a better literacy teacher and coach. In this program, I have researched, read, and compiled information to help all readers. It is my passion to help students who need our help. The goal of this site is to show other teachers, and school leaders, ways to implement best practices to motivate students and increase student achievement. The goal is to reach every student! ~Making a Difference with every child, everyday~
Let's close the Gap!
At my school, we have a population of students that ride over an hour each way to school. They are bused in from downtown Raleigh. I see this "zip-code divide" each day as they enter a prominent middle to upper class school in Cary, North Carolina. My goal with this project is to help motivate those students, and all other struggling readers, to increase their student achievement.
